Cornelius Kibelka, the Program and Engagement Coordinator (PEC) for the Wikimedia Conference, invites you to the WMCON Follow-Up Day at Wikimania 2018! It will take place on the 19th of July. The day is hosted by Wikimedia Deutschland and designed to be a space for participants of the Wikimedia Conference and other interested people to discuss topics of the Wikimedia Conference and develop them further.

Background

The Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland jointly agreed on WMDE being the host to organize and facilitate the conferences in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Starting in 2015, the conference can be organized with a long-term perspective, specific goals and with proper involvement of all affected parties. For the first time, Wikimedia Deutschland hired a Program & Engagement Coordinator (PEC) whose primary assignment is to support the program development and liaise with the participants and speakers throughout the year. The PEC creates opportunities at subsequent conferences, like Wikimania, in order to move forward with plans, activities, learnings and conversations.

What are the topics to be discussed?

There will be around 3-4 x 90 min workshops.

9:00–10:30	Future of the Wikimedia Conference Host: Cornelius Kibelka (WMDE) In 2018, Wikimedia Deutschland published a Three Year Report on the last three Wikimedia Conferences (2015–2017). Based on this report, we draw our conclusions that the current model of the Wikimedia Conference, the annual gathering of Wikimedia affiliates and the Wikimedia Foundation, doesn't work anymore as it and needs to be changed. At the Wikimedia Conference 2018, Cornelius presented a concept how it could like. After some refinement, we would like to move and have again a round of discussion of the current state of the concept – meta:Wikimedia Conference 2018/Future of the Wikimedia Conference.
10:30–12:00	Volunteer Support: Growing and diversifying your communities through minority language editing Facilitation: Veronika Krämer (WMDE), Raimund Liebert (WMAT) , Michelle Boon (WMNL) & Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) etherpad Editing Wikipedia in Arabic in the Netherlands, Sami in Norway and Occitane in France – what do those have in common, where are the differences and which learnings from one project could be applied to others? After quickly presenting a few minority language editing projects from across the movement, we want to have a group discussion to identify the challenges, parallels and differences and find solutions. The goal is to come up with some "best practises" or a "blueprint" that will allow future minority language editing projects to benefit from previous experiences.

13:30–15:00	Communications: Global campaigning Host: Lisa Dittmer (WMDE) Let's make ourselves heard as a global movement! This workshop is a follow-up to the Communications Meet-Up at this year's Wikimedia Conference, open to everyone involved in comms around the Wikiverse. Our aim is to futher explore opportunities, ideas, and capacities for internationally coordinated comms campaigns. It's also once again an opportunity to share your experiences with successes and failures in media and public outreach around Free Knowledge, to discuss new ideas and find a common voice. If you didn't have the chance to join us in Berlin in April, come along! (And if you did, let's move this forward together!)
