Meetups/Make Wiki Loves Monuments thrive across Africa

Return to Meetups index page

There is so much potential in Africa for Wiki Loves Monuments! Lets have a roundtable conversation about this. This was initially proposed as part of the program, but we had to divert it into a meetup instead.

Title
Make Wiki Loves Monuments thrive across Africa
Date & Time
Saturday 21 July, 18:00 - 19:00 in room Esino Lario. We may go for a drink or some food afterwards!
Abstract
Wiki Loves Monuments is an international annual, low-barrier photo competition. It has been organized by national teams in more than 75 countries around the world, and photo competitions like Wiki Loves Monuments have proven to be a good first project to organize for local teams.
Earlier this year, we started some dedicated efforts to identify opportunities and challenges that Wiki Loves Monuments faces in (sub-Saharan) Africa, and how we could further develop the concept to make it both more accessible and more impactful. In this session, we want to have a conversation about this with organizers from African countries, as well as with community members from countries in Africa that never organized the competition. We want to think about how to make it easier to organize, and how to make sure that African countries get better participation from photographers.
We will continue the process started at WikiIndaba, and discuss experiences, bottle necks, frustrations, alternative approaches and opportunities. The international team wants to learn how we can better help African communities to join our global effort in the 10th edition in 2019!
Usernames of all presenters
This session is primarily a roundtable. Effeietsanders will facilitate.
Desired session outcome
We would like to hear your input, and expect that you will also learn and get inspiration from organizers from other countries.
We will collect the feedback, lessons and suggestions and share them with the international community. This session is part of a larger process to make Wiki Loves Monuments better prepared for the future. We want to make it easier and more fun to organize, and we can only do that with your help!
Presentation format
