Abstract
Governments all over the globe seem to be on a quest to curb "fake news" [1], or, rather, the spread of disinformation. As Wikipedia is a top ten website and our movement has a reputation for its pursuit of truth and fact checking, we are expected to be a major stakeholder in the global debate. Already, we are represented at the EU's High Level Expert Group on Fake News and have been receiving invitations to speak on this subject in North America and across Europe and in Africa.
However, the Wikimedia movement has never discussed how it feels about initiatives regarding the spread of disinformation. Would we be willing to accept some regulation on this issue? Would we like to lead counter-disinformation projects? What role do we think online platforms, regulators, traditional media and ourselves should play?
In order to focus the discussion, we will look at four specific cases:
- The European Union's initiatives "against disinformation"
- Brazil's penal code changes to make the spread of false information punishable
- Malaysia's plans for a new law to stamp out "fake news"
- France's tabled "fake news" law

Outcomes
Participants will share how disinformation is discussed in their region and whether there are legislative proposals they know of. They will gain an overview of disinformation discussions in other regions.
