Abstract
Several millions of the more than 40 million media files on Wikimedia Commons have been contributed by cultural institutions (GLAMs) from around the world. Wikimedia Commons is traditionally one of the main Wikimedia projects in which Wikimedia volunteers work together with content partners around the world, which makes Commons and GLAM-Wiki pilot areas for the "Knowledge as a service" pillar of the Wikimedia 2030 movement direction.
Recent (early 2018) research by the Wikimedia Foundation has investigated how GLAMs around the world use Wikimedia Commons, in order to understand the challenges they encounter when contributing media, and to identify opportunities to improve the experience of GLAM contributors through new functionality based on structured data.
In this session, the researchers and team members briefly summarize the findings, check with the audience if these coincide with their own experiences, talk about how a selection of the pain points identified through the research will be addressed by implementing structured data on Wikimedia Commons, and discuss with the attendees how other (yet unsolved or seemingly unsolvable) difficulties and hurdles for GLAMs on Wikimedia Commons can potentially be addressed in other ways.
Outcomes
Based on recent research, attendees know how GLAMs interact with Wikimedia Commons, learn about the typical difficulties they encounter, and how some of these difficulties will be addressed by adding structured data to Wikimedia Commons. Attendees have the opportunity to provide feedback and direct input on next steps.
