Abstract
Images are the language independent way for communicating knowledge across languages. Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual federated photo competition with the aim of documenting and raising awareness about built cultural heritage through increased contributions to Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata and by bolstering local Wikimedia communities.
Since 2010, Wiki Loves Monuments has created a global free database of more than 1.4 million monuments from more than 80 national competitions, received almost 2 million photo submissions, and has welcomed 53K new Wikimedia contributors to Wikimedia projects. Now at its 9th year, we get together in this workshop to:
- Review the state of gaps in monument lists in monuments database (or Wikidata),
- Review the state of gaps in monuments coverage by photos submitted so far,
- Brainstorm about ways to expand the monuments lists as well as the coverage of monuments by freely licensed photos.
We also will discuss the plans for 2018 and brainstorm about the 10th year anniversary of Wiki Loves Monuments 2019. This is a hands-on workshop, and as a result a large portion of the workshop will be dedicated to help address local organizers' questions related to Wikidata migration, setting up the campaign for 2018, how to run queries to get basic statistics about the campaigns once the data is in Wikidata, etc.
Outcomes
The attendees will:
- have the basic understanding of how to set up their 2018 campaign.
- be aware of the events and support available to them throughout the 2018 campaign
- have their questions about Wiki Loves Monuments addressed.
- learn about the state of image gaps associated with monuments
- have an opportunity to brainstorm and provide input on the planning for the 10th anniversary of Wiki Loves Monuments in 2019
