Abstract
This BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) workshop will take you through the steps needed to program your Raspberry Pi so that it becomes a Kiwix server, providing Wifi access to the offline Wikipedia for smartphones, tablets and other devices.
This type of device can also be produced very easily by any one of the Fab Labs that are being opened all over the world. All you need is a Raspberry Pi 3 and a micro SD card with sufficient capacity to hold the Kiwix zim file (128 GB for the full English Wikipedia, 64 GB for French).
A smaller capacity micro SD card can be used in which case smaller zim files must be used, for example the ones without pictures or the Wiki Project Med files.
Outcomes
Attendees will have built their first Raspberry Pi Kiwix server, and they will realize how easy it is. Attendees will then be able to repeat this within their local community. Just as you do not need to be an expert to write a Wikipedia article, you do not need to be an expert to build your own Wi-Fi hotspot!
Raspberry Pi
Each participant will be able to purchase one Raspberry Pi W, at cost. Please bring your own micro SD card, you decide what capacity you want to use!
