Abstract
The workshop's goal is to make people understand how easily misunderstandings happen in an intercultural context and give some keys as to what one should be looking for when communicating in an intercultural context to avoid these misunderstandings. There are many models about intercultural communication, and here I want the audience to explore Edward T. Hall's model that explains the differences between low context and high context cultures. The workshop will have a part about explaining that concept and will have some quick exercises that allow to better understand the concept and put the workshop learnings into practice. The Low Context and High Context model can be used in intercultural communication, but also is extremely relevant to online communication, gendered communication and communication altogether. Understanding how others communicate is essential to avoid or deescalate conflict, a skill that anyone who needs to interact with others may find useful.
Outcomes
Through a series of little exercises and a bit of theory, the participants will learn to recognize when they have a tendency to communicate in low or high context mode and how this affects their relationships with others. Takeaways are a better understanding of how much context matters in various exchanges and a heightened sense of where misunderstandings may stem from, which is one of the first steps towards conflict resolution.
