Abstract
Knowledge – how it is used, who uses it when, how to use it and how to contribute to global resources that have it (such as Wikipedia) – is a necessary skill set for the next generation to master. Especially in countries and communities where access to knowledge is a challenge. Add to this the dearth of knowledge about their own societies that cannot compete with confusion provided by global media platform. The need to ensure the next generation has the tools to contribute local knowledge to global platforms is all the more relevant in emerging communities where schools are, generally, under-resourced and locally-relevant information is often scarce.
Teaching Wikipedia at schools is one of the ways to provide students with these skills and so many more (collaboration, digital knowledge, ways of contribution, research, citations, etc.).
The education projects that take place in emerging communities face specific challenges - from a lack of visibility and understanding of Wikipedia to the inability to consistently connect to the internet, or afford the data.
This panel discussion brings together people who have run projects in emerging countries to share their experiences and challenges. Panelists will be drawn from such projects as WikiAfrica Schools, WikiChallenge African Schools, Primary School project, as well as educators from South African schools: Sinenjongo High and African School of Excellence to give the educator‰Ûªs perspective. Programme managers at education programmes in Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Egypt, India, Brazil (among others) will be asked to join the panel to give as wide an experience for the audience and panelists as possible.
