Abstract

Our project "Community toolkit for greater diversity" was funded with a Project Grant in late 2017. Through this session we intend to elucidate on our methodology of creating the toolkit and on our insights and lessons from the experience of this project. We also wish to seek peer feedback from the Wikimania audience and the wider Wikimedia community. While many projects aim to correct biases in terms of those who write and are written about, this project addresses the lack of contextual reference material for existing and experienced editors in terms of spotting and addressing diversity gaps on Wikimedia projects. In this way, it aims to addresses the knowledge gap and the participation gap. The toolkit is a community resource of sorts, comprising learning modules that are:

  • tailored towards the inclusion of various underrepresented demographics, while incorporating their voices and active participation.
  • tailored to the South Asian context, in terms of social structure and cultural mores of an economically developing country.

We aim to share with the audience our experience and approach to creating learning modules in order to sensitise Wikimedian communities on:

  • identifying different axes of privilege in the context of class, caste, and gender and how it plays out on Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia.
  • using wikitools to identify content gaps on Wikipedia and their connection with demographics underrepresented on Wikipedia.

Outcomes

This project is an ongoing pilot focussed on addressing knowledge inequity in the Indian context of gender, sexuality and caste. We hope that Wikimaniacs would be inspired to adopt and contextualise the project to their own geographies, languages and diversity groups. Additionally, the large and global platform of Wikimania would enable us to seek feedback, suggestions and greater involvement from the Wikimedia community in general and from the Wikmedians invested and interested in issues of diversity and inclusion in particular.

In keeping with the project schedule, the implementation phase is slated to start after Wikimania 2018 ends. We would also appreciate Wikimaniacs’ insights and suggestions about the implementation of such projects.
